The Christmas holidays can be extremely good fun and are to be looked forward to, but they can be very expensive for some people. Christmas can be expensive if you’re just buying for your other half, but if you’re trying to buy presents for a whole family, you need to try and cut the costs wherever possible.

Memory jars are a great gift and especially good for an older relative. Ask friends and family members who know the person to give you pictures or particular memories of them, or both. Then you need to find a few bits of card (around the size of a business card) and write each memory you’ve been given on a bit of card, adding a photograph if you’ve got one. You’ll then need to find and decorate a box, jar or suitable container, fold up the bits of card and place them inside. Whoever recieves this gift will be able to spend hours reading memories of them written by people who love them, a phenomonal personal gift. It’s a great gift that costs nothing but time and effort and should be extremely well received.
A really good gift for a younger person is a secret hollow book, especially good for teenagers and the like. Find an old book lying around the house, or buy one from a charity shop, stick all the inner pages together and cut out the centre of the pages with a sharp knife. This will give the recipient a secret place to hide their diary, treasures or anything else they might want to hide. Very simple, extremely easy to do and a fantastic way of saving on Christmas presents.
Small recipe booklets also make fantastic Christmas stocking fillers. Put together a booklet containing all your favourite recipes and then personalise it as much as possible. Hand-write the recipes, or include little notes to the recipient or even small samples of chosen recipes. This is a great little gift that any mother or grandmother would especially love.
